HUNGARIAN DELEGATION VISITS RIPS

A Hungarian Delegation has paid a visit to the Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS), University of Ghana. The delegation was led by Mr. David Bekesi, Deputy Head of the Hungarian Mission to Ghana. Other members of the delegation were Mr. Andras Szekely, Head of Policy Analysis at the Maria Kopp Institute for Demography and Families (KINCS), Hungary and Ms. Judit Regos of the Parents’ House Foundation, Hungary. The meeting came off on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 in the RIPS conference room.

In his introductory remarks, Mr. Bekesi explained that the Hungarian government has been looking for opportunities to exchange best practices around the world, including Africa. Ms. Regos then said that her Foundation was looking for partners to explore the possibility of replicating the Parent’s House concept (leveraging the family unit as a driving force for change) in Ghana. Specifically, the plan was to exchange ideas on the Family Production Action Plan and how each country could impact the other in reversing the respective trend of total fertility rate (TFR).

Adding to the discussion, Mr. Szekely spoke on the work of the KINCS, a think tank funded by the Hungarian government. He said the Institute was looking for collaborative partners in the sub-region and hoped RIPS would partner them carrying out evidence-based research that would result in development and implementation of sustainable policies.

In his response, Prof. Joseph Yaro, Director of RIPS thanked the delegation for their visit and said RIPS was open to collaborating with the Hungarian government in research and exchange programmes. As part of the RIPS team that supported the Director to receive the delegation were Prof. John Anarfi, Dr. Naa Dodua Dodoo, Dr. Adriana Biney, Arhizah Blay-Abiti (Assistant Registrar) and Prof. Francis Dodoo, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university’s Office for Research, Innovation and Development (ORID).
